HAMMONDSVILLE — Edison Local Schools added two new personnel members during a brief special session on Monday. School board members held an online session through Google Meet and named Tom McConnell as the new district director of transportation and buildings and grounds and Karen Crawford as guidance counselor at Edison High School. Superintendent Bill Beattie said both individuals had a wealth of experience to bring to the district.
McConnell has served as a road supervisor at the Jefferson County Highway Department for the past 11 years and has been a Salem Township Trustee since 1999.
“He is coming into this position being very familiar with the district. He will have to learn the dynamics of daily operations of transportation and buildings and grounds,” Beattie said.
McConnell succeeds Joe DeBold, who will retire on July 31 after holding the position for 13 years. Beattie praised DeBold for his work.
“We’re sad to be losing Joe. He has built a solid foundation and provided a lot to the district,” Beattie added. “We greatly appreciate him and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Crawford has spent 19 years in education with the past 12 as a counselor for Hancock County Schools.
Her resume also includes posts as a tech prep coordinator at West Virginia Northern Community College and Jefferson Community College from August 1998 to June 2011 and tutoring and special needs coordinator at WVNCC and Bethany College from 1996-98.
“She’s got a lot of experience, not only from an administrative side as a guidance counselor but also with school-based counseling.”
He noted that she will replace Sara McGee, who is moving to Meadowbrook High School in Byesville after two years. while Samanda Pepperling is heading to Myrtle Beach, S.C., after six years with Edison. A replacement is currently being sought for Pepperling’s position.
“They were both good at Edison and always had students at the forefront. Some new opportunities arose for them and we wish them good luck.”
On a related note, the board approved 15 days of extended time for McConnell through July 31 and 100 hours for Crawford through Aug. 13 as they become acclimated with their duties.
