CHARLESTON — The age-old tradition, named the largest convention organization in the world, now has a new online format which will bring together members of the Jehovah’s Witness faith from around the world.

For decades, the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center was the place where over 4,000 people came together for the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ regional convention, coming from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided to cancel in-person conventions around the world and switch to an online global platform.

“This was a first for Jehovah’s Witnesses, who have held public conventions in stadiums, arenas, convention centers and theaters around the world since 1897,” a press release submitted by Delvin King, local media host for Jehovah’s Witnesses, said.

This year’s event is centered around the topic of “Powerful by Faith,” which will be translated into over 500 languages and available to families around the world over six weekends with the next session scheduled for today and the last session Aug. 22.

Although used to an in-person event, Todd and Velma Perry of St. Albans are looking forward to the virtual convention and believe it will help unify people from all different cultures.

“It’s pretty amazing that all over the world, we can talk to our friends in any other country and they’re going to be watching the convention at the exact same time,” Velma Perry said.

The Perrys believe the decision to take the convention virtual was in the best interest of everyone involved to keep them as healthy as possible. Velma Perry said the online convention will allow her father to participate more than he could in years past.

“In 2019, he missed a day of the program and was so upset because he has never missed a day of a convention before,” she said. “It’s definitely better for him.”

The public is invited to join the convention and it is hoped the event will uplift and encourage all participants.

“Faith has helped our global brotherhood to continue to thrive even during a pandemic, Robert Hendriks, U.S. spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Our faith will continue to unite us in worship, even virtually, as millions gather in private homes around the world to enjoy a powerful and inspiring virtual program.”

The event is available on jw.org or on the free JW Library app available on iOS or Android, Roku, Apple TV and other streaming sites.

Program dates are as follows:
