A hat-trick from Ivan Donenko helped Ukraine secure top spot in Group A with victory over Argentina at the International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football (IFCPF) Men’s World Cup in Salou.
Argentina and Ukraine had been assured quarter-final places prior to their meeting, after winning their opening two matches of the competition.
Matiaz Fernandez gave Argentina a fifth-minute lead in the top-of-the-table clash, only for Vitalii Romanchuk to equalise for Ukraine in the 21st minute.
Donenko scored his first of the match from the penalty spot to give Ukraine a narrow half-time lead.
He struck twice more in the second half to complete hat-tricks in successive matches, with an injury-time effort from Oleh Len sealing a 5-1 victory.
The result continues Ukraine’s impressive start to the tournament at the Futbol Salou Field 7.
Ukraine have only been able to participate in the tournament after the IFCPF launched a campaign to help, as Russia’s invasion had otherwise threatened to stop the team from competing.
Hosts Spain earned their first win of the competition, overcoming Northern Ireland 4-1 to finish third in Group D.
Brazil were confirmed as Group B winners, with two goals from Cesar Augusto Batista de Aguiar helping the South Americans to a 3-0 win over Ireland.
Angelo dos Santos Mota was also on target for Brazil.
Ireland finished as the Group B runners-up despite defeat.
Germany were 2-1 winners against Thailand in the second Group B match of the day.
As Group B winners, Brazil will face Argentina in the quarte-finals, while the Group A winners will play Ukraine.
Groups A and C will conclude tomorrow.
