Amazon to hire 2,500 more workers in Columbus, 9,000 statewide – The Columbus Dispatch

Amazon is hiring 2,500 more workers in greater Columbus and 9,000 statewide to meet demand that continues to surge during the pandemic as shoppers buy more products online.

Hiring starts immediately with the jobs filling a variety of Amazon roles, including work in its warehouses and transportation positions.

Amazon has data centers, warehouses and delivery stations in the Columbus area and statewide.

Its distribution operations are in Etna, Obetz and West Jefferson, and it has data centers in New Albany, Hilliard and Dublin.

Amazon wants to hire over 100,000 nationwide

Nationwide, Amazon says it plans to hire more than 100,000 workers in this latest round.

Pay for the Columbus area jobs starts above $16 per hour and ranges up to $21 per hour, along with signing bonuses of up to $2,000 in some locations. Benefits covering health care, 401(k) and college tuition amount to $3.50 per hour and become available the first day of work.

Last week, Amazon announced it will pay full college tuition for its front-line workers.

Amazon is expected to announce more jobs in the coming weeks, seasonal positions meant to cover the holiday shopping season.

Since 2010, Amazon has created more than 41,000 jobs in Ohio and invested $12 billion.

It also has invested in solar and wind farms and air cargo hubs.

Why is Amazon using hiring bonuses at its locations?

Employers across the state have complained about the difficulty in finding workers in what has become a tight labor market, but for Amazon, it depends on location, said Chris O’Malley, senior human resources manager at Amazon’s distribution center in Etna.

“At Etna, it hasn’t been extremely difficult,” he said. “Other sites in Ohio have been tougher.”

That’s why Amazon is offering hiring bonuses at some locations, he said.

Amazon has been on a hiring binge since the pandemic started, adding more than 450,000 workers.

“We are proud to offer opportunities for people from a range of backgrounds, from furloughed workers to former military personnel,” Dave Clark, CEO of worldwide consumer at Amazon, said in a statement. “We take our responsibility as an employer seriously and want our employees to succeed and thrive.
