There are countless job opportunities posted online as many employers in Steinbach and Area seek to fill their vacancies.
And April Wells from Opening Doors to Success says the employee shortage in the region is much greater than what we see online.
“Eighty percent of the jobs out there are not even posted online,” Wells says. “So, we really want people to be comfortable being able to network and look outside the box. Don’t only look online. Have confidence to approach employers.”
Wells explains that the in-person interactions can sometimes lead to opportunities, and that’s why she encourages people to make face-to-face connections whenever possible. Her team works with job seekers to build confidence.
“It seems to be that people are feeling, maybe a little bit insecure, uncertain about getting back into the workforce because of the pandemic. So, we have been trying to put the word out there to let people know that there is a lot of employment opportunity out there, people are working. There are safe measures being taken. It’s keeping the economy thriving. It’s good for mental health to have a purpose.”
Wells says they are also preparing clients for potential interview questions about an applicant’s vaccination status.
“There is a good portion of the population coming to see us that is not ready for the vaccine yet,” she says. “So, we like to know, so that we know which jobs to steer away from. More employers are getting a little bit better at sharing on their postings how they feel about hiring people with or without the vaccine. So, it’s a sensitive subject.”
Opening Doors to Success operates in Steinbach, offering free pre-employment support and workshops for people looking for jobs.
